Happiness in a material world cannot be achieved alone. As we lead our life we often ignore the very basic needs for being happy. One needs to understand and define his/her own happiness. George wanted to be happy, as we all do. He chose money and success as a medium to achieve it. He spent his whole life struggling through his job to achieve success, money and fame. He achieved them too. Now was the time when he was content and wanted to enjoy and share it with his family. When he decided to do so he realized his health does not allow him to celebrate with his choicest food and drinks. His wife, Margret, and kids, Laura and Walsh, do not really care about his celebrations. While he was busy earning wealth for himself and his family, his body grew old and lost the ability to fight. Margret had her own group of friends to hang out and do activities of her choice and so does their kids. Yes, George wanted to be happy and he worked for it, but he chose the wrong direction.
Most of us either do not realize or do not appreciate the major contributors of happiness. A study conducted by The Local Wellbeing Project and The Young Foundation published the factors that influence happiness. The result conducted by a poll for the BBC are presented in this pie chart. Journey towards Health
Good Food - Food is an important determinant of health. It contributes towards nutrition and alleviating mood.
Healthy Body - Body is the vehicle through which we take the journey of life. Body is the only place we have to live in. It is important to provide proper and adequate nutrition to the body along with regular physical activity.
Relationships are an integral means towards happiness. A relationship is about giving love. It is all about unconditional love. To maintain and enhance relationships it is important to know the basics.
Clothing is one of the most significant parts of our life. Dressing up well gives a very warm and comfortable feeling. We receive compliments from others which generate confidence in ourselves. Studies suggest that women, who are happy and positive, tend to concentrate more on their apparel, beauty and everything that helps them to appear more attractive. Wearing clothes of our choice make us happy, but keep comfort always on your mind. Clothes, especially new clothes or ethnic clothes, can divert our mind from bothering thoughts and bring in positive spirits.
Travelling to new places fills us with excitement; it gives a break from our everyday life.

The above are few means of happiness. These means can broadly be divided into external means which includes food, money, clothing, and internal means such as physical health and the healthy state of mind. Though they cannot be divided into watertight compartments, yet there is a fundamental difference between them. We can go on trying to achieve the external means to make ourself happier. Still there is no guarantee that the external means will buy permanent and eternal happiness; though they may bring immediate happiness. An easier way to achieve the everlasting happiness is paying gratitude. When we start paying gratitude we invite the nature to return more of what we are grateful for. So if a person is happy, it is guaranteed that whatever he aspires will automatically come to him in ways known or unknown to him.
The essence of ‘Means to Happiness’ is being happy for what we are and not for what we think we can be. We are all unique human beings and there is no ‘Me’ in this universe that is a replicate or even nearer to us. So instead of merely comparing and going by the standards set outside of us, we have to define our own standards; that is customize and make our life such that it is exactly fit for us. We have to pose questions to ourselves that in attaining the means of being happy, are we giving them their due weightage? Are we giving too much importance to money or success? Are we giving enough importance to relationships which contributes 50% to our happiness? Are we giving enough importance to health which contributes 25% to our happiness. Are we starving any one constituent or overemphasizing on any one?
Having read the means of happiness, have we understood and pledged to implement the same in our lives? Have we reoriented ourselves to attain better relationships at all the fronts, be it with spouse, with parents, with children or even social relationships? Have we pledged to refocus on our own health, yoga, exercises or meditation? Do we want temporary happiness or everlasting happiness? Do we want to daily enjoy the pleasures of being happy or do we want to postpone it till we achieve the things we desire?
These are some of the fundamental questions we have to pose to ourselves. We all have an inner self that is capable of answering to these subtle questions. Once we spend some time in solitude, calm down and listen to our inner voice, we will get all the answers.
Let's engage, let our inner self give answers to the above questions. Once we have the answer, given by our own inner self consciousness, that will be the one which is best for us. Our actions, thoughts and feelings will automatically start changing in the right direction.
