Ayurveda is the traditional medicine system from India. “Ayur” means long life and “Veda” means knowledge or science. Thus, Ayurveda is the science of long life. The primary aim of Ayurveda is to remove the root cause of the disease and promote health.

Origin of Ayurveda

Many years ago, sages residing in Himalaya Mountains used Ayurvedic techniques and medicines to procure their health and long life. Ayurveda being originated from the Himalayas is the indication of a civilization which existed years ago.

Science of Ayurveda

1. Ayurvedic Diet - The practice of Ayurveda emphasizes on what to eat and what not to eat, according to the three basic natures of the body “vata”, “pitta” and “kapha”.
2. Panchakarma - One of the principal techniques of Ayurveda, is “Panch-Karma”. It is a group of five techniques which is utilized as a means of body cleansing. It includes:


Shirodhara
Abhyanga
Facial Marma
Talapothichil
Marma Chikitsa

The difference between Ayurvedic treatment and allopathic treatment is that - Ayruveda tries to remove the cause and is a holistic herbal treatment, devoid of chemicals. Ayurveda has been very popular is some of the ailments and disorders such as Diabetes, Arthritis, Asthma, Obesity, Hypertension, Spondylitis, Piles, Skin Problems, Sexual Disorders etc.

Health concerns that can be treated by Ayurveda

1. Anti-Aging Supplements – 

  • Green tea contains antioxidant effects. One cup of green tea may provide 10-40 mg polyphenols. Green tea extract is an anti-ageing substance.
  • Eating dates helps to improve hemoglobin percentage and builds strong, dense body tissue. It promotes sound sleep and is must for anti-ageing and tissue repair.
  • Almonds are useful for maintaining mental clarity which is important part of true-anti-ageing.
  • Eating healthy fats like Ghee (clarified butter) lubricates our skin from inside. It is an anti-inflammatory which combats free-radical creation and prevents stress on our skin and bodies.
  • Massaging face with ghee, almond oil or coconut oil before going to bed is useful for anti-ageing. 

2. Arthritis/Bone/Joint Health –

  • Eat Calcium rich foods like goat milk, yogurt, green vegetables, salmon, sardines, and tuna.
  • Eat fruits like papaya and pineapple; it contains enzymes that help to reduce inflammation.
  • Garlic and turmeric are anti-inflammatory. Include plenty of garlic and turmeric in your diet.
  • Consumption of horse gram, ginger bitter gourd, and drumstick are beneficial for arthritis.
  • Avoid constipating foods like fish, milk, urad dal and jaggery.

3. Brain/Memory Health –

  • Include variety in your diet. Ayurveda recommends that you should include all of the 6 tastes at each of the main meal you eat-sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent.
  • Antioxidants are beneficial for effective functioning of the brain. Consume whole uncooked plants in the form of fruits, vegetables, sprouts and naturally occurring plants, which are good source of antioxidants.
  • Add up little fat and some proteins in your diet as they are essential for brain. It helps in maintaining memory. Ayurveda prefer clarified butter (ghee) and almond oil for mental health.
  • According to Ayurveda, the healthiest diet consists of whole food in its natural form, without peeling and cooking. It is good for mental health.
  • Avoid canned, frozen or artificial color added food items; as it reduces its nutritive value, which is not good for brain health.

4. Cancer                                                 

  • Skin cancer: Green leafy vegetables, beta carotene rich sweet potatoes and carrots should be consumed regularly. A healthy diet helps in overcoming skin cancer.
  • Lung cancer: Consuming raw garlic twice a week nearly halves the risk of lung cancer.
  • Kidney cancer: Maintain a healthy life style; avoid smoking. Eating healthy food lowers the risk of kidney cancer.
  • Breast cancer: Incorporate anti-cancer immune boosting foods like whole grain, green leafy vegetables, Broccoli and avoid caffeine.
  • Thyroid cancer: Avoid dairy products and salty foods. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables.                                           

5. Dental/Oral Health –

  • Ayurveda recommends herbs for dental problems which include neem, turmeric, clove, banyan, babul and holy basil.
  • Honey mixed with a glass of water is beneficial for teeth and curing dental problems.
  • To maintain oral hygiene chew mint leaves, seeds of fennel or cloves.
  • Massaging teeth with clove oil is helpful for tooth decay.

6. Digestive Health –

  • According to Ayurveda drinking warm water in the morning and 30 minutes before larger meals is helpful to cleanse digestive system.
  • Spices like ginger, black pepper, rock salt (Himalayan salt), turmeric, lime and coriander are useful in improving digestion.
  • Ginger, chamomile or peppermint tea approximately 15-30 minutes after eating is helpful in digestion.
  • Ayurveda suggests light meal in the evening because our body begins to slow down in the evening.
  • Turmeric is an effective and powerful medicine for digestion.

7. Endocrine System –

  • Iodine rich foods are recommended for endocrine.
  • Sea foods are great sources of iodine which is crucial to thyroid health and preventing thyroid disorders.
  • Foods rich in vitamin A such as pumpkin, green leafy vegetables and carrots add to the balanced functioning of thyroid glands.
  • Two spoons of coconut oil added to the milk is beneficial for the rectification of thyroid functioning.
  • Beverages including coffee, tea, carbonated drinks and alcohol should be avoided by thyroid patients.
  • Herbal tea with ginger is beneficial for thyroid functioning.

8. ENT Health -

  • Chewing gum and yawning is effective for earache on flights. This contracts the muscles and opens up the Eustachian tubes.
  • Make paste of some basil leaves, warm the paste mildly and squeeze four drops in the infected aching ear. It will cure ear ache.
  • Take a bunch of neem leaves, clean it well and immerse in boiling water. Steam inhalation of this decreases the ear problems.
  • For whistling sound in ear - warm sesame seed oil or ghee (clarified butter) at low temperature and pour 2-3 drops into ears regularly.
  • Eating pecan nuts (walnut) is effective for whistling sound in ear.
  • According to Ayurveda, 2 drops of onion juice can be given as nasal drops to control nose bleeding.
  • Garlic juice, holy basil, crushed pepper corns, clove and honey mixture is effectual for nasal block.
  • Oregano oil is effective remedy for nasal congestion.
  • For clearing blocked nasal passage, take some carom seeds, tie it in a clean cloth and heat this cloth in a vessel and later sniff it.
  • Boil few drops of camphor carom seeds in water and inhale the steam. Steam inhalation twice a day provides good result for cold.
  • For common cold, coughs and sore throat - mix 2 teaspoons of honey with equal quantity of ginger juice.
  • For instant relief from sore throat add crushed black pepper to honey and lick it before going to bed.
  • Drinking warm lemon tea with dash of honey and herbal tea is excellent remedy to reduce throat pain.
  • Sucking popsicles is useful to sooth irritation and discomfort in throat.
  • Naturally prepared lime oil, thyme and geranium can be diluted in olive oil for external use in case of throat pain. Cover throat thereafter, it will be magically relieving.

9. Eyes care -

  • Consumption of 1 tablespoon of Aniseed powder daily in morning is beneficial for eye health.
  • Eating green vegetables regularly helps to keep eyes healthy and free from diseases.
  • Take mixture of Aniseed powder and Coriander seed powder in equal proportion and then mix it with unrefined sugar. Take 12 grams of this mixture daily in morning and evening is helpful for cataract.
  • Drinking 12 glass of water each day keeps your eyes healthy.
  • For healthy eyes, add cardamom powder in boiling milk and drink it at night regularly.
  • Sweet potatoes are a great source of vitamin A which is essential for healthy eyes.

10. Female Health

  • Eat organic and local, seasonal food because they are best diet for the healthy body.
  • Include foods that are light, dry and warming; in your daily meals.
  • Drink lots of water, it assists metabolism and digestion, prevents constipation and the accumulation of waste products in the body and keeps the diseases away and even helps in keeping the skin clear and pimple free.
  • Avoid foods like leftovers, canned food, packed foods, frozen food and items grown with chemicals etc.
  • Avoid caffeine - Avoiding or reducing coffee consumption can greatly reduce your breast cancer risk. Coffee is often heavily sprayed with chemicals and pesticides, which are naturally estrogenic.  
  • Sleep on time -   Wash your face with water many times a day.
  • Take on oil massage
  • Exercise regularly
  • Follow proper hygiene and preserve health
  • Maintain body weight
  • Drink a glass of warm milk before going to bed. This will help you sleep peacefully.

11. Hair Health –

  •       Massage your hair with hot coconut oil; avoid washing hair immediately after oiling them.
  • Avoid food like fast food, chips, Chinese food, pizza, burgers etc. It provides very low nutritional value. As a result, lack of nourishment of body and hair remains the main cause for dull damaged hair and hair fall.
  • Avoid washing hair with hot water, it damages hair.
  • Include food which provides good nourishment to body, such as milk, ghee, coconut milk fruit juice, raw vegetables and fruits etc.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Aloe-Vera heals the scalp and also cleanses the pores. Aloe-Vera gel mixed with coconut milk when applied to scalp reduces hair fall and dandruff.
  • Apply Henna powder, Shikakai powder with lime juice. It is a good natural conditioner.
  • Regularly apply pure coconut oil or medicated hair oil - it will decrease dandruff.

12. Heart Health –

  • Eat right - It is very important to eat right for heart. It is very important to eat a heart friendly diet such as fresh fruits, vegetables. Start your day with apples or pears, include soaked almonds in your diet, dress your veggies with fresh lime juice and eat heart friendly spices such as fresh ground black pepper and the antioxidant spice turmeric.
  • Exercise moderately and regularly - Walking is excellent exercise for everyone and excellent therapy as well. The early morning is ideal for taking a 30 minute walk. It will not only help your heart, it will prepare you for the day by charging up your circulation and your metabolism. Also will balance the ayurvedic factors.

13. Kidney Health –

  • Fruits
  • Dry fruits that are pistachio, almonds and chilgoja are useful to tone up weak kidneys.
  • Fresh fruits: mango is beneficial to remove weakness of kidneys. Fresh pineapple daily is useful for the cure of kidney stone.
  • Coconut water is very efficacious in urinary troubles.
  • Banana: Take a banana fruit and 25ml juice of amla with sugar. It cures urinary and spleen troubles.
  • Grape: Take three raisins and remove their seeds then enclose one black pepper in each of them. These should be taken at bed time for a few days continuously to cure Strangury (urination by drops)
  • Vegetables: Take leafy vegetables like palak (spinacia alero, corchorus capsularis, calsak) Ramdana, root vegetables.
  • Carrot juice cures kidney troubles.
  • Radish leaves and small sized roots are efficacious in cure.
  • Onion bulb juice is beneficial.
  • Flowers of Rosids variety of Moringa i.e. Sahjan is highly efficacious as cure of kidney disorders.

14. Men’s Health -

  • Milk, 10-20 ml of white onion juice, 5-10 ml of honey, 5-10 ml of ginger juice, 1-2 gm of ghee - Drinking this for 21 days will decrease the problem related to men’s health.
  • 2 gm of Asuragandha churan is mixed with a little ghee and rock sugar power and take along with milk.
  • A small ripe banana is eaten along with 6 gm of ghee twice a day will decrease the men health problem.
     

15. Metabolic/Miscellaneous Disorders -

Tips for diabetes:

  • The bitter gourd is regarded as the best remedy for diabetes. Drinking at least one table spoon of bitter gourd juice daily will reduce blood sugar levels in your blood and urine.
  • Having bitter gourd cooked in ghee for a period of three month will bring the diabetes down by a significant amount.
  • Drinking a glass of water with 10 tulsi leaves, 10 neem leaves and 10 belpatras early morning on an empty stomach helps in keeping sugar levels under control.
  • Put one cup of water into a copper vessel at night and drink the water in the morning.      
  • Avoid sugar in any form. Rice, Banana, Potato, Cereals, Fruits contain high percentage of sugar.
  • Include at least one bitter dish in every meal.
  • Take plenty of green vegetables, black gram, soy, fish etc.
  • Vegetables such as bitter gourd, string leaves, cucumber, onion, garlic and fruits such as Indian gooseberry are helpful.
  • Raw vegetables and herbs play a part in stimulating the pancreas and enhancing insulin production.

16. Skin Products -
